Why the classroom can become a cue to check your phone

Smartphone use is often discussed as if it lives entirely inside the device. Behavioural science suggests the physical environment matters too. Research in Scientific Reports found that smartphone habits were stronger in spaces people visited out of habit — and a school is one of the most repeated environments there is.

The classroom as a cue

A student sits down in the same classroom they use every morning. The bag goes under the desk. The chair scrapes. Before the lesson begins, their hand reaches towards their phone almost automatically.

The interesting question is not simply why they checked their phone. It is whether the classroom itself has become part of the cue.

Most conversations about phones in schools still treat the problem as if it lived inside the device: too many apps, too many notifications, too little self-control. Those things matter. But habits are not formed in a vacuum. They are formed in rooms, corridors, routines and repeated days. If the same behaviour happens in the same place often enough, the place can start to help trigger the behaviour.

That is the central idea of this guide, drawn from a 2025 study in Scientific Reports by Morgan Quinn Ross and colleagues: phone habits do not exist independently of the places in which they happen. Repeated environments can become part of the cue that triggers habitual smartphone use.

The overlooked part of smartphone habits: place

Habits are behaviours that become easier to start, and harder to notice, because they have been repeated in stable conditions. A useful simplified model is:

  • A behaviour is repeated
  • It is repeated in the same environment
  • The environment becomes associated with the behaviour
  • Entering that environment can help cue the behaviour
  • The behaviour becomes increasingly automatic

This is a behavioural framework, not a proven causal chain from this study alone. It is the picture within which the paper’s findings sit. In that picture, the cue is not only a notification, a feeling of boredom, or the phone in a pocket. The cue can include the room you have just walked into.

That is why stable contexts matter. A behaviour performed once, anywhere, is just a behaviour. A behaviour performed many times in the same place starts to belong to that place. The researchers’ question was more specific: what happens when a smartphone habit and a spatial habit overlap — when the apps you use automatically meet the places you visit automatically?

What the researchers did

Ross, Rhee, Le, Mount, Chang and Bayer followed 419 Android users for two weeks. A custom app logged each person’s location and the app in the foreground of their screen, and prompted map-based questionnaires about the trips they had taken. The resulting dataset is unusually dense for this kind of question: more than 27 million GPS and app logs, and 7,226 trip questionnaires.

They looked at two kinds of spatial habit. Destinations were the places people repeatedly visited — home, work, a regular café. Routes were the journeys people repeatedly travelled between those places. They also measured habit in two ways: how often something actually happened in the logs, and how automatic people said it felt.

The design is observational. It can show whether smartphone habits and spatial habits tend to travel together. It cannot show that changing a place will change a phone habit, and it was not a study of schools, children, or any particular product.

What they found

That sentence is the paper’s title, and it is also a fair summary of the result. People were more likely to use their habitual apps in habitual spatial contexts. When those apps were used, usage could also be greater in those contexts. The overlap was not a side note. It was the point.

Habitual places appear to strengthen habitual phone behaviour. If an app was already used out of habit, it was especially likely to be used — and, when used, used more — in places the person already visited or travelled through out of habit. Two habits, in other words, can reinforce one another rather than sitting side by side.

Destinations matter more consistently than journeys. The relationship was more uniform for the places people arrived at than for the routes they took to get there. A habitual destination — a room you enter again and again — appears to be a more reliable context for this kind of association than a habitual journey. For schools, that distinction is useful. Classrooms, libraries and social spaces are destinations. Corridors are closer to routes.

What people actually do may tell us more than what they remember doing. Objective indicators of habit — logged frequency — produced more consistent findings than subjective self-reported automaticity. That does not make self-report worthless. It does suggest that people are not always the best witnesses to behaviours they perform without thinking, especially when those behaviours are brief, repeated and scattered through a day.

Not every app habit depends equally on place. Social apps were particularly habitual, and relatively context-independent: more likely to be used across a range of places. Non-social apps showed a stronger relationship with habitual destinations. Some phone behaviours, in other words, may be more closely tied to environmental cues than others. A messaging habit may follow a student around. A game, a news app or a particular tool may be more bound to the rooms in which it is usually opened.

The authors discuss the idea that environmental change may interrupt habit activation. They also identify spatially dependent device settings as a potential mechanism for limiting unwanted app use in particular environments — theatres are the example they give. That is a suggestion about how the finding might be used, not a test of any such setting.

Why this matters for schools

Schools are unusually stable environments. Students repeatedly enter the same building, sit in the same classrooms, move through the same corridors, spend breaks in the same areas, and follow the same timetable. Few other settings in adolescent life are as geographically and temporally regular.

That makes schools powerful environments for habit formation — for better and for worse. If students repeatedly use phones in classrooms, corridors or social spaces, those environments may gradually become associated with checking behaviour. The room does not merely contain the habit. It may help to cue it.

The converse also follows as an interpretation, not as a finding from Ross et al. If particular spaces consistently have different expectations around phone use, those environments may help support different behavioural norms. A library that is reliably a place for reading, a classroom that is reliably a place for teaching, a pastoral room that is reliably a place where a phone can be used to get help — each of those is a different phone environment, even if they sit in the same building.

A school, on this view, does not only have a phone policy. It also has a phone environment. The written rule is what adults can point to. The environment is what students actually practise, several times a day, in rooms they already know by heart.

Why rules alone can be difficult

There is a difference between “students should not use their phone here” and “the environment consistently makes phone use unavailable here.”

Conventional policies often depend on repeated conscious decisions. Do I check it? Can I get away with it? Has the teacher noticed? Is this technically allowed? Every one of those moments requires self-regulation, from the student and often from the adult in the room. A policy that has to be remembered, interpreted and enforced at the point of temptation is a policy that will be applied unevenly by November, however clearly it was written in September.

A context-aware system can instead make the environment itself more consistent. It does not remove agency, and it does not guarantee behaviour change. What it can do is reduce the number of times a day that someone has to negotiate the same boundary. The decision moves from the moment of reaching for the phone to the earlier, calmer moment of deciding what this room is for.

From phone rules to phone environments

The traditional model is simple: one rule, applied everywhere, relying heavily on enforcement. The context-aware model is different: different spaces, different expectations, automatically consistent conditions.

A school might choose, for example, that classrooms and the library are restricted; that the dining area follows whatever rule the school actually wants at lunch; that a pastoral care room keeps phones available; and that normal access returns outside the school boundary. Another school might choose differently. Sixth-form common rooms, outdoor spaces and social times are all legitimate points of disagreement.

The point is not that every space must restrict phones. The point is that the policy can reflect the purpose of the space. Teaching needs attention. Pastoral care may need a working phone. The walk home should not still be running yesterday’s classroom rule. When the map is clear, students do not have to keep asking what the rule is. They can learn the building instead.

How Limmi applies this principle

Limmi lets schools define where phones should and should not be available. As students move around the site, the appropriate policy can be applied automatically. The same classroom is the same rule on Monday and on Thursday, with the first teacher of the day and the last, without a member of staff having to notice a phone and interrupt a lesson to make the policy real.

That can make a phone policy spatial, consistent and predictable — and less dependent on constant teacher intervention. It is still a policy. Adults still decide what each space is for, what remains available, and where genuine exceptions sit. The system carries those decisions into the rooms themselves.

The Ross et al. research does not test Limmi or location-based restriction. But it supports an important premise behind context-aware phone policies: physical environments and smartphone habits are not independent. Where a behaviour happens can become part of why it happens.

Designing better phone environments

Good policy does not necessarily mean maximum restriction. It means intentional restriction. Before choosing a product, or tightening a rule, it is worth walking the site with a short set of questions for every space:

  • What is this space for?
  • What role, if any, should a smartphone have here?
  • Should phone access be unrestricted, restricted, or deliberately available?
  • Is the policy consistent enough for students to understand it automatically?

An example map, not a prescription:

  • Teaching rooms — restricted
  • Library — restricted
  • Assembly hall — restricted
  • Pastoral care — available
  • Sixth-form common room — a school choice
  • School boundary — normal access restored

The last line matters as much as the first. A boundary that never ends is harder to accept, and harder to explain, than a boundary that belongs to a place. Students should be able to leave a teaching space and know, without a further instruction, that the rule of that space has ended.

What the research does not tell us

The study is observational rather than an intervention. The participants were Android users, and adults — 35 years old on average — not schoolchildren. The observation period was two weeks. Some habit measures were self-reported. Location effects differed according to the type of app and the type of spatial context. Those are not footnotes. They are reasons to stay precise about what the paper can and cannot support.

Further research would be needed to determine specifically whether location-based phone restrictions improve educational outcomes, wellbeing, attention or long-term smartphone habits. Until that work exists, the honest claim is narrower: the environments in which phone use happens appear to be part of the habit, and schools are unusually well placed to take that seriously.

Ask what the space is for

We often think the problem lives inside the phone. But part of our relationship with technology may live in the environments around us — in the rooms we enter without thinking, and the behaviours those rooms have come to expect.

For schools, this opens up another way of thinking about phone policy. Instead of asking only “What phone rule should we have?”, schools can also ask “What relationship with phones should this particular space encourage?”

That is a design question as much as a discipline question. It is also a question a school can usefully ask even if it never changes product, never buys a new system, and never tightens a single rule. Walking the site and naming the purpose of each room is already a more precise policy than a paragraph in the behaviour handbook.

Limmi is one way of putting those decisions into practice: infrastructure for a phone policy that belongs to the building, not only to the person standing at the front of the room.

Common questions

No. Ross et al. did not test Limmi, location-based restriction, or any school phone policy. The paper describes an association between spatial habits and smartphone habits in adult Android users. Limmi applies a related principle — that place and phone use are not independent — but that is a design choice informed by the research, not a result of it.

No. The useful implication is intentional restriction, not maximum restriction. Pastoral care, medical need, caring responsibilities and some sixth-form spaces may reasonably keep phones available. The research does not prescribe a map. It suggests that whatever map a school chooses will be more effective if it is consistent enough to become part of the environment.

It matters as a behavioural principle, not as a direct finding about pupils. The participants were adults, with a mean age of 35. A school timetable is an even more repetitive environment than most adult days, which is why the underlying idea is relevant to education. It is not evidence that the same statistical relationships would appear, unchanged, in a classroom.

That is not known. The authors discuss environmental change as a way of interrupting habit activation, and they mention spatially dependent device settings as a possible mechanism. Neither was tested here. Whether such systems improve attention, wellbeing or long-term habits in schools would need its own research.
